Dental Implants

Each year millions of Americans experience tooth loss – which can be caused by tooth decay, periodontal disease or injury. At Florida Craniofacial Institute, we are proud to be the connection of surgery, medicine and dentistry. Options for those experiencing tooth loss have been limited in the past to bridges or dentures. Now, we have another solution, dental implants.

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots used to replace the original/damaged natural root. Whether using a permanent replacement, teeth are made to match your natural smile. Dental implants are used as a long-term solution for those suffering from missing or failing teeth and chronic dental problems.

Who can get Dental Implants?

Patients should have healthy gums with enough bone to hold the implant. Those who are healthy enough to undergo routine dental extractions or oral surgery may be considered for dental implants. Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits are necessary. Patients who have had radiation to the head/neck area, heavy smokers, or those with uncontrolled chronic disorders (diabetes, heart disease, etc.) are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

What are the benefits of Dental Implants?

Benefits include:

  • Improved Speech – With dentures, some experience slipping within the mouth which can cause slurring or mumbled speech. Dental implants become a part of your smile with the rest of your teeth, without worry of slipping.
  • Improved Comfort – Permanent implants remove discomfort associated with removing dentures.
  • Overall Improved Oral Health – Nearby teeth are unaffected by dental implants. Individual implants give easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene.
  • Improved Appearance – Dental implants are fused to the bone creating the look and feel of your own teeth, permanently.
  • Durable – With proper care, your dental implant could last years to a lifetime.
  • Easier to Eat – Slipping dentures can make eating difficult. With dental implants you can eat and drink your favorites with confidence, and without the pain.
  • Convenient – Dental implants combat the embarrassing inconvenience of having to remove dentures. No more messy adhesives, just a natural looking smile.

What is involved?

The medical staff at Florida Craniofacial Institute is proud to ease the experience of getting dental implants every step of the way. Each implant is carefully bonded to the jawbone by a small connector piece called an abutment to securely hold the new tooth. To make your new teeth, your doctor will make an impression of your tooth, or teeth, to create a model of your bite. The impression will capture all your teeth, their type, and arrangement. The model, made from the impression, will help create the new tooth or teeth. The replacement tooth, otherwise known as a crown, will be attached to the abutment.

What is the best way to Care for Dental Implants?

Dental implants look, feel, and perform like your natural teeth and should be cared for the same way. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash and dental check-ups are necessary.

Is the procedure Painful?

Local anesthesia can be used during the procedure to help reduce pain and discomfort. Many people have reported that implants involve less pain than a tooth extraction.

Are Dental Implants Successful?

Dental implant success rates can vary, based on a multitude of factors such as placement in the jaw. Generally speaking, dental implants have a success rate of up to 98%, with proper care.
